A&M SYSTEM REFERENCES

The Texas A&M University System adheres to AP style, the recognized standard for journalistic and news writing. The AP Stylebook is updated each year and available in both print and digital formats.

Referencing the A&M System
When referencing The Texas A&M University System, use “The Texas A&M University System” on first reference (with a capital “T” in “the”) and “A&M System” or “Texas A&M System” on second reference. Do not put a space between the letters and the ampersand (not A & M).

Correct: The Texas A&M University System
Second reference: A&M System or Texas A&M System

Incorrect: TAMUS or TAMU System

Exception: TAMUS is allowed in digital applications such as website URLs and social media for hashtags (e.g., #TAMUS) and account names (e.g., @TAMUSystem).

To prevent confusion in publications for external audiences, always use “A&M System” or “Texas A&M System” on second reference, not just “System” alone.

In publications for internal audiences, the uppercase word “System” can be used alone on second reference.

  • A&M System employees involved in the project were elated.
  • They were proud that so many System members could pull together on a single project.

The website address for the A&M System should always be listed as “tamus.edu” or “www.tamus.edu.”

About The Texas A&M University System
The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest and most impactful higher education systems in the country, with an annual budget of $9.1 billion. Its statewide network includes 12 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, Texas A&M–Fort Worth and the Texas A&M–RELLIS Campus. The A&M System serves approximately 184,000 students and reaches millions more through research, service and outreach programs each year. With nearly $1.6 billion in annual research expenditures, the A&M System fuels innovation, supports communities and drives Texas’ economy forward.

  • A&M System institutions without the A&M affiliation in their name should add the phrase “a member of The Texas A&M University System” to their stationery, business cards and other external publications.
  • All A&M System universities, agencies and health science center institutions should be referred to as “members” of the A&M System, not parts or components.
