Academic Planning & Policy
The A&M System is dedicated to offering guidance and support to our 11 member universities in academic planning, policy, and program review matters. The approval process is meticulously designed to ensure that the highest quality standards result in exemplary degree programs and contribute to our students’ long-term academic and professional success.
As the A&M System universities continue to expand their academic programs in response to their strategic plans, specific guidelines must be followed to remain in compliance with The Texas A&M System, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

Factors to Consider: Degree Program Change or New Degree Program
These guidelines are intended to assist an institution in determining whether a pending change to an existing degree program would necessitate a new degree program request. That decision is generally made after a holistic review of several factors that may be weighted differently for different situations. It is not a formula to dictate a decision but rather a set of pointers to the most critical factors that may, taken together, indicate a reasonable direction. Any one factor indicated below might signal the need to request the change as a new degree program instead of a change to the existing program. But in general, the more extensive the change/s, the more likely the need for a new degree program request.
A&M System Member Institutions SACSCOC Accreditation Liaisons
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accredits degree-granting higher education institutions in Southern states. Each candidate or member institution designates an Accreditation Liaison to maintain a working relationship with SACSCOC staff.
