(Galveston)—The McDaniel Charitable Foundation has granted Texas A&M University at Galveston a $1 million dollar endowed chair in sustainable marine fisheries. This is the first million-dollar endowment for the ocean-oriented branch campus of Texas A&M University.

The McDaniel Chair in Sustainable Marine Fisheries will support the complex and challenging scientific understanding of fishery ecosystems and the impact of nature and human activity on these systems. Proceeds from the endowment will partially support a faculty member whose research focuses on such issues.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to endow this chair as it ties in closely with our goals of fostering and supporting the students and institutions of higher education in Galveston County,” said Will Frazier, a McDaniel Charitable Foundation board member and senior managing director of Howard Frazier Barker Elliott, Inc., in Dallas.

“Texas A&M University at Galveston is the right institution to provide the basic research we need to provide a practical way to balance commercial growth and habitat preservation,” he said.

TAMUG has a unique opportunity to develop a variety of programs related to marine fisheries through its undergraduate degree offerings in marine biology, marine fisheries, and oceans and costal resources; its graduate degree in marine resources management; and its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

“Texas A&M University at Galveston is moving into the next stage, with this endowment serving as the cornerstone for ensuring our continued research and education in marine fisheries,” said R. Bowen Loftin, vice president and chief executive officer of TAMUG. End of story
