Island Waves student newspaper wins six Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Awards

Members of the Island Waves student newspaper won six awards in the state Division III category at the 97th annual conference of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA). TIPA is the oldest collegiate student press association in the United States.

“Journalism is all about correcting errors whether it is through the editing process or writing a piece to displace a rumor running round the campus,” said Sara Slaughter, Island Waves editor-in-chief. “The students awarded have learned to identify errors, correct the ones within their writing and draw much needed attention to others.”

Awards Presented to the Island Waves included:

The Island Waves student newspaper was a dream of student Edward Glaze. Glaze worked with then Student Life department to develop the student newspaper we know today. After a few independent publications the first official edition of the Island Waves was published on February 9, 1993.

In the fall of 2004, the Island Waves became a weekly newspaper publishing every Thursday throughout the spring and fall semesters. The Island Waves publishes one orientation issue for incoming freshman and transfer students at the beginning of summer. Currently, the newspaper has a staff of 14 students and is advised by Brittany Wood, student activity coordinator for the University. The newspaper is available on line at Island Waves Student Publication - Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
