Wendy Gramm, Ph.D.

Wendy Gramm of Helotes received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley
College in 1966 and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1971.
Dr. Gramm is the founder of the Regulatory Studies Program of the Mercatus Center
at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Before joining the Mercatus
Center, Dr.Gramm served as chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading
Commission from 1988-1993. She was administrator for Information and Regulatory
Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget from 1985-1988, the Executive
Director of the Presidential Task Force on Regulatory Relief and Director of
the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Economics. Dr. Gramm
was on the research staff of the Institute for Defense Analyses. She started
her economics career at Texas A&M University, where she taught economics
for over eight years. Dr. Gramm has an extensive publication record
including articles in the American Economic Review and the Journal
of Law and Economics.
An economist, Dr. Gramm serves on the Executive Committee of the Association
of Private Enterprise Education and is a member of the board of the Texas Public
Policy Foundation. She has received several awards, including Financial
Executive of the Year from the Financial Management Association.
Dr. Gramm was appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Rick Perry in 2001.
She serves as chair of the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs and is a
member of the Committee on Audit. Dr. Gramm is chair of the Campus Art and
Aesthetic Improvement Committee and a member of the Committee on Educational
Access. She is the Board's special liaison to the Bill and Irma Runyon
Art Collection Committee, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the
Glasscock Center for Humanities Research Development Council. Dr. Gramm
has also served as a member of the Committee on Health Affairs. Her term
expires February 1, 2007.
